Who We Are
Kickstand Community Bikes is an all-volunteer shop that gets bicycles to people who may not be able to afford a bike. By operating community bike shops, teaching repairs, and safe practices, we help keep those bikes on the streets. We also work to connect riders to local bike resources.
Our shop practices the reuse of resources and recycling of materials in all practical ways.
Inspired by the Yellow Bike Project of Austin TX, and modeled on Community Bike shops from around the world.
What We Do
Bike Repairs
Kickstand repairs and inspects used bikes to donate back to those in need in our community. We can show you how to safely repair your bike yourself, but we are not a full-service shop. Please consider supporting local bike shops for your more complicated repair needs.
Volunteer Training
Volunteers work with our team of experienced mechanics and organizers to learn bike repair skills and grow as community leaders. All are welcome to learn, regardless of skills and experience! Find out more here!
Community Outreach
Kickstand promotes cycling by sponsoring and participating in community events like Open Streets and Earth Fest and partnering with a wide variety of local organizations, schools and nonprofits. Want to work together? Let's do it!
Our Mission
Our mission is threefold, and based on a few fundamental values. Find out more about what guides the volunteer work we do below!
Sustainability
Sustainability is more than a buzzword– it defines Kickstand's purpose. As a bike-centered, sustainable nonprofit, we repair donated bikes from folks like you to reduce waste in Knoxville. We use those bikes to provide free, eco-friendly transportation for under-served peers in and around the Knoxville area.
Equity
Cycling is more than a hobby, it's an essential life skill that promotes fitness, responsibility and freedom of movement. Kickstand realizes that this passion of ours is not accessible to many people and are committed to fixing that by supporting those most in need with free bikes and resources to improve their lives and upward mobility.
Education/Safety
Bike safety is of utmost importance to Kickstand. That's why we teach clients our best practices for bike repairs and bike safety and provide helmets and locks in addition to donated bikes. We also maintain active partnerships with BikeWalk Knoxville and Vision Zero, groups committed to ensuring safe cycling infrastructure on Knoxville streets.
